I don't know it will help...

...but at least it's cute.  Ah the dishes.  It's one of those things that just has to be done.  I used to have paper plates on hand.  In an effort to be "green-er," we don't have them anymore.  I am currently working towards breaking up with paper towels...

When I put dishes in the dishwasher, I basically wash my dishes first.  Yes, I am one of those people.  Still reading?  Good!  I do it mostly because my dishwasher just isn't that great at getting food off of the dishes.  Unfortunately, I confuse my family as to when the dishes are dirty or clean with this annoying quirk.  I've seen the magnets that stick on the washer in stores, but since I have ICTMTM Syndrome(I-can-totally-make-that-myself), I knew I could make something myself.

I found this idea from Suzy over at Joy Is At Home. I told her I was borrowing her idea right away.
It uses old CDs.  For mine, I actually used the clear plastic insert that is on top of a package of CDs.

I traced the circle on my paper, and cut it out.

I got out the Mod Podge and brayer and glued the paper to the plastic.  I closely trimmed the paper, and found some cute letter stickers in my stash to spell out dirty and clean.

I also had some cute little tags, so I put them in the middle. I covered it with Outdoor Mod Podge and then acrylic sealer. I used some self-adhesive magnet strips for the back.

Thank you is a magical phrase...like how I put it in both directions?  That way, whoever loads or unloads the dishwasher will see my gratitude!  Besides me.  Hint. Hint.

P.S. Fred was so well liked, that I made him his own button!  Yay Fred!

  4. Way to stay green and stashbust. For two more days. Not that I'm counting. I broke up with paper plates but I'm still together with the paper towels. ( I do re-use ones that were just used to wipe up water etc...guess how...uh in my craft room)

See...you're nice. Because if I made one of those ( which I totally need to do) mine would say something like: Yes I'm clean now empty me!

  5. I am your newest follower. I am following you from Follow Me Back Tuesday. I would love if you would visit my blog and follow me back. Have a fantastic day!

  6. Hey my partner in Stashbusting...I just gave you an award ( it's actually a combo of two) http://answerischocolate.blogspot.com/2010/09/im-bad-blogger-and-hoos-birthday-card.html

  8. I need to make one of these but i bet my husband will still ask whether they are clean or dirty! :-) And I LOVE that Fred has a fan club AND a button!

  9. That's really cool, Christine! I have a dishwasher, but I don't think magnets will stick to her as she's mostly carbon-based, and she probably wouldn't stand still long enough to figure out a way to stick stuff to her without magnets...

  10. I too wash the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher ;)

  11. Brilliant! I've been looking for a solution to this little dishwasher dilemma. Is it clean or is it dirty? Or (hmmm, if I pretend it is dirty then I don't have to empty it.)

  12. That is soooo great I am going to do that as well!! I have been trying to figure out what to use and an old CD is perfect as I have a ton!!!
